Large Provençal Mirror With Pareclose 18th Century Period
Large carved and gilt wood parclose mirror, decorated with grapes and vine leaves. The pediment is richly ornamented with a cornucopia ending in a shell motif. Provençal work, known as “Beaucaire” style, mid-18th century. Dimensions : 187 cm x 102 cm. Condition : Sold as is. Wear and restoration to the gilding, losses, central mirror plate of later date, several of the parclose mirror plates damaged; see photographs.
This type of mirror is traditionally referred to as a “Beaucaire mirror,” in reference to the famous fair held in the town of Beaucaire (Gard) during the 18th century. Although it was most likely not manufactured in Beaucaire itself, it is a common Provençal model.
