Jean-MathieuChevallier(1694-1768)is a Parisiancabinetmakerof the eighteenthcenturywho had a great successduring his lifetime.He is the brotherof CharlesChevallier, alsocabinetmakertalentrecognized.
He beganhis career as afurniture dealerruede Grenelle,"LaCroixChevallie."He receivedhisMasteronMarch 5, 1743.
Hebecame prosperousand receivedorders forseveralaristocraitiquesresidences suchas the hotelandthe Duke ofTalmontCastleVillegenis, which belonged toLouis-Anne deBourbon-Condé.
His presence,in 1745,among thecreditorsof AndréCharlesBoulleIImay indicateacollaboration between the twoartisans.
Jean-MathieuChevalliersaid theElder,stampedchests,corner cupboards, secretaries, chestsandcabinetsLouisXV, theinlay workis alwaysof the highest quality.It is known foritsvery decorativeand veryfloralmarquetryworked, but ithas also madeinlaidwith geometric motifs,including itsconvenientreminiscent ofthe form "tombeau"of the Regency.
